Coding is an important skill in the information age. It is also a useful skill to learn if you want to get a new job that has a better salary. The following list includes more advanced coding and programming languages in addition to coding for beginners. Classes for all of these languages are available online, making it easier than ever to learn one of these languages.

HTML/CSS
A good place to start, if you’re learning a coding language for the first time, is HTML/CSS. HTML stands for HyperText Markup Language and CSS stands for Cascading Style Sheets. While these are among the simplest coding languages, and thus not the most in-demand languages, they are incredibly useful to know. HTML is used for creating a website page. It tells the web page where and how to display words and images. CSS further tells the web page how to display fonts, layouts, and colors. You can take free classes for both languages through websites like Codecademy, or else pay for a more inclusive service from sites like Code School.

SQL
This is currently one of the most in-demand coding languages. SQL stands for Structured Query Language. It is a programming language used to communicate with a database to complete tasks such as accessing or updating data. It is specifically used to manage data in relational database management systems or relational data stream management systems. Some examples of these types of databases include Oracle and Ingres. Java
While some might consider this language to be outdated, most applications and websites still use Java and will not work properly without Java installed on your computer or device. Java can be used for software and system development in addition to in applications. It is similar to the C and C++ languages, but easier to learn. You can learn Java for free through Codecademy.

JavaScript
This is one of the easier languages to learn, after HTML/CSS. While similar-sounding to Java, this is a completely different programming language. It is used to create interactive web pages, like polls and quizzes. This language is usually built into major browsers and doesn’t need to be downloaded to your computer.

C
This is a general-purpose programming language that has been used to create computer programs for decades. This language will allow you to read and write code for a variety of platforms. There are many guides and classes available online for this language as well.
