An Introductory Guide]]> https://www.psafe.com/en/blog/smart-pens-introductory-guide/ Thu, 15 Dec 2016 18:00:11 +0000 https://www.psafe.com/en/blog/?p=6512 For scribes and students alike, pen and paper might bring to mind an antiquated, analogue mode of writing. Still, there’s something more to the use of paper and pen than mere nostalgia: an inherent use-value that motivates us to transition them into the modern world of tech rather than retire them for good. So what’s the future of jotting notes, thoughts, or plot points to the next great American novel? Meet the smart pen.

What is a smart pen?

A smart pen is basically a pen that contains a camera, an audio recorder, and a built-in computer that enables users to record, save, and upload data. Livescibe Smartpens currently dominate the market with their main product: The Pulse Smart Pen. That said, since it’s built on an open Java platform, eager and talented developers have access to the source code they need to perfect or expand the design. And with the recent release of an enhanced model called the Echo Smartpen, we’re likely to see even more new and exciting developments in the near future.

How does it work?

There’s an infrared camera at the tip of the pen that records what you write. Using special paper that employs a dot positioning system, the pattern of uniquely printed microdots are what allows the camera to follow and record the strokes of your writing. What’s more, there are controls at the bottom of the page that enable its audio features. To activate audio recording, you simply tap the “on” button using your smart pen. To transfer your notes and audio to your computer, you place the pen in its cradle and connect it to your machine. Once the data is uploaded, you can refer to your notes and audio tracks from your computer.

Why do I need it?

For reporters or students in particular, the recording feature can be really helpful. Once enabled, not only does the pen record the audio around you while you write, but it also aligns these audio recordings with what you’ve written at the time. So, for example, suppose you return to your notes later in the day and find that the meaning is unclear. All you have to do is tap on the confusing section of your notes and the audio will play back what was said (in this case, by the professor or in class) at the time you took those notes.

Visit the Livescribe website and you’ll find a growing community of people who have already begun to share their class notes, recipes, or the drawings they’ve created. Accompanied by audio, you’ll hear stories unfold beside these mini animations. If nothing else, it certainly opens the door to new possibilities of creative expression. What will yours be?

<![CDATA[Protecting Your Devices When Studying Abroad]]> https://www.psafe.com/en/blog/protecting-devices-studying-abroad/ Wed, 31 Aug 2016 21:53:27 +0000 https://www.psafe.com/en/blog/?p=3311 There is plenty of both software and hardware available to keep your digital devices safe when studying abroad. There are even GPS capabilities now built into laptops, smartphones, and tablets that will allow you to find your device if it gets lost or stolen. However, there are also many ways you can prevent theft of your digital devices in the first place! Let’s take a look at a few methods of ensuring your digital devices don’t end up in the wrong hands.

Keep Them in an Older Case or Bag

If you’re spending a semester abroad, you will inevitably want to get a few new things for your experience. However, when carrying around your laptop, camera, smartphone, or tablet, it is best to keep them in something older. An older looking case or an unbranded messenger bag/backpack will draw far less attention than something that is brand new or designer. This is especially true if you have a specific bag for your hardware, like a camera bag that says “Cannon” or a laptop bag with the Apple logo. The less obvious you can make the contents of your bag, the better.

If Traveling, Keep Devices With You

The best way to ensure your devices don’t get lost or stolen, especially when on a plane, is to keep them with you. Keeping them in your carry-on bag may cause some delays at security, but it will give you peace of mind knowing that your $600 phone, your $800 tablet, and your $1200 laptop aren’t being handled by anyone besides you.

Put a Label on Your Items

If something does happen to get lost when abroad, it can be hard to claim a device, even if it’s found. Without a label, how can you prove the device is yours? Labels are old fashioned, but a simple sticker with your contact information inside your phone’s case or on the body of your laptop can make claiming your lost device much easier.

Finding a “Safe” Place

You can’t always bring your devices with you, especially if you have a DSLR with a few lenses or a heavy laptop. In this case, the best thing to do is use a safe, or if one isn’t available, get a lock and key. Drawers, closets, or hidden storage can be locked in order to protect dorm room guests from going through your things.

Many of these suggestions can be used when studying at your local college or university, but when studying in a place that is completely new to you, it is best to take a little extra precaution, and make sure you get yourself into a routine. It could save your devices from ending up in the wrong hands!
