More recently, some users have complained that the platform does not do enough to censor malicious and inappropriate content, while others say that it is impeding free speech in the name of political correctness. Given this information, it is not surprising that Mark Zuckerberg’s recent plan to change the way that Facebook handles nudity and violence has been met with both applause and resistance.

Understanding the Potential New Filter System
Mark Zuckerberg has accurately noted that different people react to nudity and violence in different ways. While some strongly disapprove of any type of violence and nudity, others don’t mind seeing some graphic images from time to time. Many of these users would prefer that Facebook leave graphic images in place instead of removing them.

For this reason, the new Facebook filter would ask all users for their preference. Once the survey is complete, preferences would be set for a particular area based on what the majority of users from the area in question requested on the survey.

Is This Filter System a Good Idea?
The new filter system has the potential to create just the type of environment that any Facebook user wants. Additionally, Zuckerberg has noted that those who don’t like area-wide filter settings can adjust them. In short, anyone who doesn’t mind seeing nudity and violence on Facebook can continue to do so if they so desire.

However, critics point out the fact that most people are either too lazy or simply not tech-savvy enough to change individual settings. This means that the default settings are likely to remain in place for all users, even those who would prefer less nudity and violence. What’s more, Facebook’s current filter system does not allow people to see what content is being censored from view.

As the world changes, it is obvious that Facebook will need to change as well in order to stay in step with the times. However, whether or not the proposed new filter system is a change for the better remains to be seen. While this filter system has its good points, it also has downsides that will need to be considered carefully if it is ever implemented.
