Last summer it seemed like every city had Pokémon on the brain, but by fall, the app’s popularity had fallen. However, the Pokémon Go era is not over yet. The following will discuss four updates to the app that could signal an upswing in its popularity. If you stopped playing the game last year, one of these exciting new updates may be exactly what you need to improve your Pokémon Go experience.

Upcoming Update: Shiny Event

Players predict that Niantic, the maker of Pokémon Go, is working on new “shiny” characters. What are these shiny characters? In the first release of these characters, they were special, difficult-to-catch Magikarp and Gyarados. Players suggest that the update might be coming soon because Pokémon are behaving the same way they were before that previous update: Niantic changed Pokémon encounters. They were different before the first shiny release to make it harder for players to fake their locations.

Upcoming Update: The Mysterious “Big Event”

Niantic recently rolled out an Easter “Eggstravaganza” event that lasted through April 20. While that event was a hit, the company’s general manager teased a bigger event for the app, saying that he hoped users would keep an eye on the events. As for what Niantic meant by this tease, users are speculating that the “big event” could introduce functions that users have wanted like raids and player trading.

Upcoming Update: Legendary Creatures Update

Another mysterious tease from Niantic: CEO John Hanke said that players could expect to see more legendary creatures added to the game “this year.” These legendary creatures include popular Pokémon animals like Mew, Zapdos, Lugia, and Articuno.

Recent Update: New Creatures and Features Update

Recently, Pokémon Go added 80 new characters from the Pokémon Gold and Silver video games. If you’re familiar with the video games, you’ll know that the new creatures added were originals found in the “Johto” region of the video game universe.

In addition to the new characters, Niantic also added new features. For example, Pokémon now react differently than they used to when players try to engage with them. Additionally, Pokémon that players find in the Kanto region can evolve to play in the Johto region, too. Finally, new berries were introduced, as well: the Nanab Berry slows Pokémon down, while the Pinap Berry doubles the amount of Candy received in the next catch.

Games make up a huge portion of the entertainment market, both online and through a simulated multi-player console. MMO-style fun is creeping up there, especially in the unique and competitive world of sports. MMO, or “massively multiplayer online,” is a casual term to describe a serious, growing trend in gaming. There are already hundreds of choices for MMO games in different categories of entertainment such as sci-fi, fantasy, horror, and more. The natural introduction of sports into online gaming happened some time ago, but it is making waves in the MMO world as of late.

Popular MMO Games

Popular choices for MMO games include: FreeStyle Football, Empire of Sports, United Football, FIFA Online 3, and many more like those. These online options come with their own interactive features that will keep records of progress from the players and their opponents.

Other games in a sportsmanlike style do not necessarily have to be rooted in reality, either. MMO games exist where fantasy and fiction characters engage in conventional sports, which creates a fun twist on a classic idea. Check out several choices on Google Play and see what will be compatible for your Android device.

There is even a practical use for this technology. By simulating actual sportsmanlike combat, users are able to use the knowledge they accumulate to develop a base for rules and sports medicine techniques. The areas of study are proving to be useful to more than just data; students and curious gamers are benefitting from eSport MMO’s on a more frequent basis than ever.

As a final note, be sure to check out the eSports arena being put into production in Taipei, Taiwan. There is a large audience there that watches eSport competitions in order to pick up tips and enjoy an intense, unified experience. The categories range beyond the expected World of Warcraft audience to every type of competition-based game, from golf to more violent, warfare-based interests. This is an opportunity to expand in the diversity and open-mindedness of the MMO gaming community, and definitely something to watch out for.

<![CDATA[Which Companies Are Profiting off of eSports and How?]]> https://www.psafe.com/en/blog/companies-profiting-off-esports/ Fri, 21 Oct 2016 20:05:55 +0000 https://www.psafe.com/en/blog/?p=4956 eSports, also known as electronic sports or professional gaming, is a gaming competition that involves players competing online in a variety of different video game genres. These gaming genres include first person shooter, strategy, fighting, multiple online battle arena, and more. There are several tournaments hosted for the best players in the world to compete. While this new gaming competition is an exciting innovation for gamers across the world, it is also highly profitable for those who wish to take advantage of the business.

So, Which Companies Profit from eSports?

Riot Games
It seems as if the companies that produce eSports games haul in the most revenue. Riot Games is the creator of the famous League of Legends (LoL), which has over 85 million players worldwide. After assessing the exploding popularity behind eSports, Riot Games quickly formed their own league for LoL players to compete in. The League of Legends Championship Series is currently in its fifth season. The events have been hosted at major sports venues such as Madison Square Garden and the Staples Center. Last year, their world championship finals attracted 27 million viewers.

Surprisingly, Riot Games doesn’t profit directly from the LoL Championship series. The company invests in eSports rather than profiting from the games. For example, the Chinese Internet company Tencent Holdings bought a majority stake from Riot Games for a price of $400 million.

Other Gaming Companies
Just as Spalding would profit from an increase in basketball players, the gaming companies are getting a steady flow of revenue from this new fad. The high sums of money at stake for some of these tournaments is incentivizing players around the world to invest heavily in the games that they love. When these games become eSports, they become more than just video games — they become a profitable competition. As a result, this adds an extra incentive for players to spend lots of time and money improving their skills.

Brands and Sponsorships
Just like professional athletic sports, sponsorships are a big part of the revenue associated with eSports. eSports have become increasingly popular to watch online. As a result, several companies are taking advantage of this marketing scheme. Just as LeBron James is sponsored by Nike, several big companies such as Red Bull are sponsoring talented eSports gamers to help improve the marketing of their brand.
